Lecture: “Israel, the Arab World, and the Media”

On June 6, 2013, the lecture “Israel, the Arab World, and the Media” was held at the Pocitos Campus. It was presented by Pilar Rahola, a former member of the Spanish Parliament for the Catalan Republican Left (1993–2000) and former Deputy Mayor of Barcelona (1994–2000).

The speaker discussed the situation in the Middle East and how it is covered by the international press. The event was organized by Keren Kayemet LeIsrael and the Department of Jewish Studies at Universidad ORT Uruguay.

Rahola holds a degree in Hispanic and Catalan Philology from the University of Barcelona. She currently contributes to Spanish media outlets such as Onda Cero and Tele Cinco, hosts a daily segment on social issues on the program "Els Matins de TV3," and writes a column for the newspaper La Vanguardia. She has worked as a journalist covering conflicts such as the war between Ethiopia and Eritrea, the Balkan War, the First Gulf War (from Jerusalem), the fall of the Berlin Wall, the storming of the Russian Parliament, and the independence process of the Baltic States.

She is the author of “Color de verano” (1985), “La questió catalana” (1993), “Mujer liberada, hombre cabreado” (2000), “Carta a mi hijo adoptado” (2001), “Historia de Ada. The Trampled Rights of Children” (2002), “Caught in Discord” (2009), and “The Islamic Republic of Spain” (2011).

She holds an honorary doctorate from the University of Arts and Communication Sciences in Santiago, Chile (2004) and was awarded the “2004 Cicla Prize ex aequo” by the Ibero-American Communities of Israel at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (2005). She is an Honorary Member of Tel Aviv University (2006) and received the Order of the President from the same university (2009). B’nai B’rith (France) awarded her the “Golden Menorah” (2006) and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem the “Scopus Prize” (2007). 

He received the following awards: “Best Newspaper Columnist” from the Spanish Professional Association of Press, Radio, and Television Reporters (2007); “Mass Media Award” from the American Jewish Committee (2009); “Angel Pulido” from the Federation of Jewish Organizations of Spain (2011); “Daniel Pearl Award” from the Anti-Defamation League (2010); the “Morris Abram Human Rights Award” from UN Watch ( 2011), the “Best Practices in Non-Sexist Communication” award from the Association of Women Journalists of Catalonia (2011), and the “Samuel Hadas Award for Friendship between Spain and Israel” from the Israeli Embassy in Spain (2012).
