Denise Vaillant: A Uruguayan Woman Advancing the Teaching Profession on the International Stage

In September 2023, Dr. Denise Vaillant, dean of the Institute of Education at Universidad ORT Uruguay, participated in three international meetings of great significance to the field of education.

The distinguished professor and researcher first attended the 5th Annual Meeting of the Advisory Council of the Organization of Ibero-American States for Education, Science, and Culture (OEI).

The meeting, held in Buenos Aires, aimed to identify proposals and initiatives to advance the transformation of education, with a focus on promoting technology and artificial intelligence.

Under the theme “Digital Transformation as a Gateway to Educational Transformation,” the meeting was attended by more than 30 education experts from renowned international institutions, representing over a dozen countries in the region. 

In 2023, Dr. Denise Vaillant was selected, based on her experience and track record, to join the OEI Advisory Board, which is the organization’s highest advisory body responsible for establishing the policies and strategies that guide its work.

Serving on the OEI Advisory Board is a great opportunity to engage with a group of top-level Ibero-American professionals.

In addition, the current academic director of the Doctor of Education Universidad ORT Uruguay at Universidad ORT Uruguay the meeting of the Latin American Coalition for Teaching Excellence, which was also held in Buenos Aires.

This is a network that Vaillant has been part of since its inception in 2019, with the aim of promoting the professionalization of teaching in Latin America. It is composed of academics, public policy makers, teachers, and foundation executives from more than 14 countries, and was established at the initiative of the Inter-American Dialogue.

In particular, during this meeting, the coalition released the study it is conducting on the motivations behind choosing a career in teaching.

Being part of the coalition allows us to join forces and identify specific actions to promote teaching excellence in our region.

Finally, Vaillant traveled to New York to participate in the meeting of the High-Level Panel on the Teaching Profession, which was held at the United Nations building.

The meeting, which coincided with the United Nations General Assembly, provided an opportunity to promote collaboration, facilitate interaction with key stakeholders, and highlight the importance of the teaching profession on a global stage.

Established by António Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, with the support of the ILO-UNESCO Joint Secretariat, the High-Level Panel on the Teaching Profession aims to develop a set of recommendations, based on empirical evidence, on how to achieve the goal of ensuring that every student has a professionally trained and qualified teacher.

In 2023, Vaillant was selected—based on her experience and professional background—to join this group, which brings together 15 international leaders in the education sector, including the ministers of education from Romania, Indonesia, South Africa, and Argentina, as well as representatives from teachers’ and students’ unions and leading global education experts.

The High-Level Panel on the Teaching Profession is a unique forum for discussing and defining strategies to strengthen the role of teacher educators worldwide.
