Designing Landscapes: A Lecture by Architect Paula Rial

July 17, 2020

What is landscape architecture? What does a landscape architect do? How do you know if you want to be a landscape architect? These are some of the questions that architect Paula Rial, instructor of the elective course “Landscape Architecture Workshop,” sought to answer in the webinar “Designing Landscapes.”

During my studies, I never thought I’d become a landscape architect. I’m not a good gardener, nor am I good with plants—I don’t have a “green thumb”—but I do like plants

With this statement, architect Paula Rial began recounting her personal journey, which led her to landscape architecture after she completed her architecture studies.

Rial participated in the ORT exchange program and studied at the University of Manchester. In her projects, she was noted for the seamless integration she achieved between interior and exterior spaces. She later attended a summer workshop at the American Association (London), which sparked her interest in exploring contemporary art. In Uruguay, she joined the Contemporary Art Foundation, where she researched floral patterns and wallpapers.

During the conference, the speaker presented national and international landscape projects, showing attendees how they are depicted and how various contemporary cities have been transformed through landscape interventions.

He delved into the work of Leandro Silva Delgado, a Uruguayan architect and landscape architect, to whom Rial dedicated a research paper that was published in the journal *Anales de Investigación en Arquitectura* in 2015.
