Ian Duddy, the United Kingdom’s ambassador to Uruguay; Hadil Fontes da Rocha Vianna, Brazil’s ambassador to our country; and Andrea Nicolaj, head of the Economy and Trade Section at the European Union Delegation in Uruguay, attended the course on Diplomatic LawintheBachelor’s Degree in International Studiestaught by Amb. Agustín Espinosa as part of the “Dialoguing with Ambassadors” series. Duddy and Nicolaj made the visit on June 29, and Hadil Fontes da Rocha Vianna did so on July 6, 2018.
Throughout the course, the class took the form of a dialogue in which students presented their required papers to international ambassadors. Each paper consisted of an in-depth study of the foreign service of one of three countries or organizations—selected for their prominence on the international stage—as well as the diplomatic methods used in the planning and implementation of their foreign policy.
Each group of students (three per group) presented their research to ambassadors invited by the university, summarizing their findings and engaging in an informal dialogue to ask questions about aspects that particularly interested them but that they had been unable to clarify during their research.
The event sparked a lively exchange of information and ideas with the diplomats, giving the students a unique opportunity to engage in informal, direct dialogue with foreign diplomats on topics of particular interest to their professional future.
