The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic challenged traditional approaches to teaching and learning. It left educators facing a situation of complete uncertainty. And, crucially, it proved doubly overwhelming for new teachers who lacked the tools, support, and experience needed to tackle complex educational challenges.

In this context, the article“New Teachers in Latin America: Challenges in Times of Uncertainty”offers a reflection on the induction process for new teachers in Latin America, in light of the latest international trends in this area.

This article was contributed by Dr. Denise Vaillant, dean of the Institute of Education at Universidad ORT Uruguay, and Yael Ferreira, who is responsible for web content at the Institute of Education and the Center for Continuing Education in Higher Education (CAES), and editor of the journal Cuadernos de Investigación Educativa.

The pandemic highlighted the challenges faced by new teachers, who have had to navigate and cope with a situation that has been stressful both professionally and emotionally.

Based on a review of the literature, this study identifies the challenges faced by teachers as they begin their careers in the classroom. At the same time, it presents various Latin American initiatives and examines the factors that contribute to the success or failure of these interventions.

“New Teachers in Latin America: Challenges in Times of Uncertainty” is published in Volume 18 of the Revista Eletrônica de Educação, covering the period January–December 2024.
