Interview with Micaela Riezler

The graduate spoke about her professional and academic background, what it was like to pursue her master’s degree, and what skills the program provided her with.

What made you decide to pursue ORT's Bachelor's Degree in International Studies?

I've always been interested in pursuing a career in international relations. However, I wasn't sure whether to pursue a career in diplomacy, trade, or international organizations.

As for choosing a university, after researching this major—or a similar one—at the various institutions that offered it, I realized that ORT’s program was the most comprehensive and interesting in terms of its curriculum, elective courses, exchange semester, and other features.

What has your career path been like?

My career has always been in international trade. In my various positions, my responsibilities involved working with both other countries and Uruguay.

After returning from my exchange semester, I started working at an international shipping company in the sales department. Later, I worked at an international logistics and commodities trading firm, where I was responsible for certain operations.

In 2018, I decided to broaden my horizons and enrolled in a master’s program in international business management in Berlin, Germany. After completing the program, I started working at an international chemical company in Berlin.

What are your responsibilities as a cash management specialist at BASF?

I am currently in the learning phase, as I started working in January. However, I have clearly defined responsibilities and am quickly becoming more independent. My responsibilities involve providing financial services to specific branches of the company in Europe.

What skills did your degree provide you with to succeed in international business?

The program includes a variety of required and elective courses related to international business, some of which I took in Montevideo and others in Brussels, Belgium, during my exchange program. There were also extracurricular lectures that were essential, highlighting the importance of international relations.

Throughout my career, I have always had to draw on the knowledge I gained during my studies, such as in financial markets, international trade, strategy, and marketing, among other areas. What I learned at ORT has been a tremendous asset in helping me understand the economic underpinnings of everyday issues and form well-informed opinions on a variety of topics.

What was it like to pursue a master's degree at The Berlin School of Economics and Law (HWR)?

The experience was excellent, both academically and personally. In addition to the courses, it included talks by experts and visits to various companies. The curriculum was very comprehensive, practical, and up-to-date. On a personal level, I would highlight the constant cultural exchange in both professional and everyday contexts.

How did your academic performance compare to that of your classmates?

My grades were very good, and I was able to keep up with the coursework without any trouble. Thanks to my GPA, I graduated with honors, just as I had at ORT.

What did you learn while working on your thesis? What were the main contributions of your work?

The thesis involved developing a framework for implementing Logistics 4.0 and recommending a specific technology to achieve a certain level of technological advancement, based on the case of a private company.

To this end, I interviewed various experts in the field and used other methods to collect data. The main takeaway was regarding global technological development and its various applications.

What aspects of ORT’s Bachelor’s Degree in International Studies did you find most important?

The program allowed me to develop skills related to understanding information, as well as the importance of clear and effective communication, among other key aspects essential for professional growth. In addition, the exchange semester was a time of significant personal growth.

The Bachelor's Degree in International Studies is a program that allows students to specialize in various fields, such as diplomacy, academia, or business. What led you to choose business?

The knowledge I gained in the various ORT courses—both practical and theoretical—as well as my understanding of the international landscape, led me to choose a career in international trade.

In any case, I have a keen interest in international institutions, and the exchange program in Brussels gave me the opportunity to get an up-close look at the various institutions of the European Union.
