Participants included Dr. Pablo Mieres, a professor in the Department of Social and Political Sciences at the Catholic University of Uruguay, and Prof. Lincoln Maiztegui, a professor of contemporary history at the University of Montevideo.
They analyzed the speech delivered at the Obelisk Ceremony, its political context, the challenges it faced, and how it was actually carried out on the 30th anniversary of that civic event. The discussion was moderated by Francisco Faig, Ph.D., Professor of History, Politics, and Society at the faculty.
The event was organized by the Department of History, Politics, and Society as part of the series “40 Years Since the Coup d’État.”
Pablo Mieres holds a Ph.D. in Law and Social Sciences from the University of the Republic. He is the presidential candidate for the Independent Party.
Lincoln Maiztegui is a high school history teacher at public and private schools. He is a journalist for the newspaper El Observador. He has a long career in journalism across various media outlets in Uruguay and Spain. He is the author of historical columns and articles, as well as several books, including “Orientales: A Political History of Uruguay.”
