The world's largest geek camp will be held in Punta del Este

Universidad ORT Uruguay at Campus Party, the world’s largest technology and innovation event, with two interactive activities: an escape room, a video game jam, and a digital arts workshop.

For the first time, Uruguay will host the local edition of the world’s largest technology, innovation, and creativity event, which takes place in 13 other countries. It’s called Campus Party, and for those in the know, it’s the most significant geek gathering in the international community. The event will take place over the weekend of Friday, March 15, through Sunday, March 17, at the Punta del Este Convention Center. During those days, the venue will host 80 national and international speakers and 740 "campers"—that is, members of the general public who will be camping there for three days.

This initiative—launched in Spain in 1997—aims to bring together and harness the talent of amateurs and professionals in the fields of computer science, science, creativity, innovation, and entertainment to generate ideas and projects. In that spirit, ORT is participating with three activities.

On one hand, the team from the Bachelor’s and Engineering Program in Biotechnology at ORT’s School of Engineering will be joining the latest entertainment trend: escape rooms. Participants will have to solve a crime by searching for clues related to biotechnology in order to escape the scene before time runs out.

Meanwhile, the Bachelor’s Degree in Design, Art, and Technology, also offered by the FCD, will host an introductory workshop on digital arts using Processing, a powerful open-source software tool specifically designed to create interactive visual applications. Instructors will explain what digital arts are and how they relate to programming, enabling participants to create videos in which the viewer interacts in real time. They will also have the opportunity to experiment with the glitch technique, which involves distorting a base image to generate new visual expressions through form and color.
