“The increase in access to higher education, particularly among disadvantaged groups, presents several challenges,” said Dr. Denise Vaillant, academic secretary of the Institute of Education at Universidad ORT Uruguay.

Ensuring equity and quality in higher education are two of the most pressing challenges, in her view, as she noted in the chapter“Faculty Professional Development in Higher Education: Emerging Issues and Research Gaps.”

For that reason, he noted that it is essential to improve “the quality of teaching and strengthen teachers’ professional development.”

In the chapter, Vaillant defined the concept of professional development for teachers, particularly in Latin American higher education. At the same time, he offered a series of suggestions for strengthening the role of teachers.

“Teacher Professional Development in Higher Education: Emerging Issues and Research Gaps” appears in the book *Newcomers to the Teaching Profession in Higher Education*, edited by Eloisa Maria Wiebusch and Maria Inês Côrte Vitória. It was published by EdiPUCRS in 2018.
