“Strengthening the teaching profession is one of the main concerns of Latin American governments,” says Dr. Denise Vaillant, academic secretary of the Institute of Education.
The article“Strengthening Teacher Professional Development: A Latin American Perspective” —which appears inIssue 5 ofthe Journal of Supranational Policies of Education (JoSPoE)—provides an overview of the teaching profession, describes the regional educational landscape, and reflects on the challenges and solutions for teacher development.
According to Vaillant, strengthening the profession is only possible “if there is political will and sustained support for successful initiatives over time.”
He also adds that it is important for teachers to be “part of the solution,” since “without their participation, commitment, and dedication, it will be impossible to overcome inequality in learning outcomes.”
