Soccer: A Story of Passion and Strikes

May 30, 2018
Footb-All Mix is an international project coordinated by Felipe Taborda and Susana Machicao—graphic designers from Brazil and Bolivia, respectively—that brings together 32 posters paying tribute to soccer, created by artists from each country participating in the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

The exhibition will be on display in each designer’s hometown, and in the case of Uruguay—represented by visual artist Fidel Sclavo—the venue chosen was the main lobby of Universidad ORT Uruguay Downtown Campus. There, visitors will be able to take a journey around the world through 32 posters starting Wednesday, June 6, 2018, and continuing at least through the duration of the tournament.

“These are posters created specifically for this event. They feature the work of highly accomplished international designers, such as Fernando Pimenta from Brazil; Alain de Quernec from France; Neville Brody from England; and Mehdi Saeedi from Iran,” explained Gustavo “Maca” Wojciechowski, a professor of several courses in theBachelor’s Degree in Graphic Design and the technical program leading to a Graphic Designer certification at ORT’s School of Communication and Design.

At the same time, as a counterpart to Footb-All Mix—using the same format and printing method—the Design School lobby will host an exhibition of 32 soccer-themed posters created by university students enrolled in the courses “Persuasive Design 1” (part of the Bachelor’s in Graphic Design program) and “Editorial and Advertising Design” (part of the technical degree program). “You’ll be able to see what’s happening on the international stage and what our students are up to,” said Wojciechowski.

Although the students were free to choose any technique for creating the posters, they had to keep in mind that they could not include any recognizable jerseys or figures in their work. “It’s about the concept of soccer—the game, the dynamics, the adrenaline, the joy, and the sense of community,” the teacher added.

When asked which fundamental concept from the course influenced the creation of these 32 posters, “Maca” mentioned visual impact. “One of the things to keep in mind with a poster is focus: it should be as concise as possible. It’s a central idea, a core concept, and not much else. The goal isn’t to have two or three ideas, but rather to make it concise, because a poster needs to be decoded in just a few seconds,” he concluded.

Below are some of the international posters, and we invite you to visit the university and embark on a journey through the world of soccer.
