As part of the Department of International Studies’ Lecture Series, in collaboration with the Jean Monnet ThinkEur Module, the conference “The Labyrinth of Central Europe: Populism, Uncertainty, and the Russian Invasion of Ukraine” was held, where Romanian political analyst Radu Magdin addressed the rise of populism globally, noting that we are living through “a decade of social, economic, and political upheavals” that favor its expansion.
He highlighted the spread of populist trends worldwide, driven by technological globalization and the proliferation of misinformation.
Magdin highlighted Latin America's experience with populism as a relevant case study and contrasted Uruguay's political stability with the realities in other countries.
He also stressed that we need governments that are “more competent, more in touch with the people, and more effective in their communication” to avoid falling prey to populist movements, especially in a context of “multiple crises” and growing social polarization.
