To mark its 15th anniversary in Uruguay, the Spanish Cultural Center is hosting the "15 x 15 Debates," which explore various themes it has been addressing since its establishment in Montevideo in 2003.
On Wednesday, September 19, a debate on education was held, titled “Is the Museum a School?”, featuring Fabián Barros, M.A., academic coordinator of the Bachelor’s Degree in Design, Art, and Technology at Universidad ORT Uruguay; Prof. Fernando Miranda, director of the National School of Fine Arts and the Visual Culture research group; and Cecilia Bertolini, a psychologist Cecilia Bertolini, a member of the MEC’s Arts Education Division, and Magdalena Muttoni, coordinator of the Educational Services Division at the MAPI Museum of Pre-Columbian and Indigenous Art.
Some of the questions raised during the discussion were: Should a museum be a school? Do methodologies associated with the visual arts offer an alternative pedagogical approach? What interactions occur between schools, education, art, and the stakeholders involved? How do new forms of visual production incorporate educational elements?
Fabián Barros outlined the reasons why he believes museums are schools and should function as such: “The museum experience complements academic education; to achieve this, we need to transform the museum space into a place where different audiences can have meaningful experiences.”
