Gerardo Matturro, a research professor in software engineering and associate coordinator of the Bachelor’s Degree in Systems, completed an undergraduate research project in software engineering titled “Undergraduate Research in Software Engineering: An Experience and Evaluation Report, ” which was accepted for publication in the *Journal of Universal Computer Science*, a journal ranked in the Q2 quartile by Scopus.
"Theundergraduate research experience (URE) refers to a teaching-and-learning activity in which students are actively involved in all stages of a research project."
The article describes and evaluates my work over the past seven years supervising research-based senior projects with students in the Systems Engineering and Systems Science programs.

To conduct the study, Matturro surveyed undergraduate students who participated in these research projects between 2015 and 2022.
This allowed them to provide more detailed insights into their motivations for participating in software engineering research projects, the skills they acquired or improved through their participation in such projects, and their perception of the benefits and practical value for their future work and professional activities.
The results revealed that participation in real-world software engineering research projects is highly valued by college students, who see benefits in the development of research skills, soft skills, and abilities relevant to their future careers.
"Leading this type of project involves training software engineering professionals who are capable of conducting research, while also producing results that contribute to the body of knowledge in the field," Matturro said.
The full article will be available on the journal in March 2023.
