Job Title: Business Analyst at Maltería Oriental
Interview published in November 2008.
In 2004, he began pursuing a bachelor’s degree in International Studies at ORT University. In 2007, he completed an internship at Citibank. He subsequently worked at Nestlé. He currently works as a Business Analyst at Maltería Oriental.
By the time he graduated from high school, Javier knew he was interested in international affairs, but he wasn’t sure whether he was more drawn to economics or diplomacy. “A classmate showed me the curriculum for the Bachelor’s Degree in International Studies; I liked the variety of courses and how the program was structured at ORT.”
He says that throughout his studies he had excellent professors. “At the university, I had outstanding Uruguayan ambassadors and professionals who were experts in international business. This gave me a broad perspective on both worlds.”
He acknowledges that all the courses were interesting and gave him a broad understanding of the subject matter. He also believes that elective courses are a very positive aspect of the program. “I decided to take courses in Business Administration, and that’s when I realized that this area of the program particularly interested me.”
He emphasizes the university’s approach to learning and believes that required assignments are essential for professional growth. “I’m currently in a job where I have to write reports, and because I got used to writing two or three required assignments per semester at ORT, the task feels easier to me.” He also views the fact that these assignments involve group work positively, as it allowed him to exchange ideas with others.
In 2006, through his university, he completed an internship in Citibank’s Corporate Banking Department, assisting the Head of Corporate Banking. “Later, I took on more responsibilities in my role: drafting contracts, monitoring accounts, and other tasks.” According to Javier, it was an enriching experience that gave him insight into the inner workings of a bank.
In April 2007, he began working in Nestlé’s Procurement and International Trade department. “I was involved with the logistics chain related to sourcing materials for the company and supplies for its industrial operations.”
Later, in August 2007, he joined Maltería Oriental, where he currently works as a Business Analyst. “I assist the General Manager with market research. I also help with foreign trade operations and am responsible for the company’s corporate image.”
In 2008, Javier was selected by the Office of Academic Exchanges of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs from among approximately 70 students from various Uruguayan universities to participate in the Global UGrad program, which involves spending a semester studying abroad at a U.S. university.
He plans to graduate next year, after spending a semester in the United States. Javier notes that ORT is a place where he has always felt at home, so much so that he has often chosen the library as his study spot.
