Students of Mandarin Chinese, mentors to Chinese exchange students, and those interested in Chinese culture and language gathered on Thursday, August 18, 2016, at the School of Management and Social Sciences.

The event was organized by the university, with support from the Chinese National Office for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (Hanban), as part of the Chinese Corner project—a space developed by the Universidad ORT Uruguay Library Universidad ORT Uruguay collaboration with that office since June 2014. It features 300 books and audiovisual materials for teaching the language, culture, and history of China.

The event highlighted key aspects of today’s Chinese youth, including their tastes, hobbies, challenges, dreams, and concerns. It also explored the differences between East and West through the work of Chinese artist Liu Yuan (“East Meets West”) and similar projects created by alumni of exchange programs with China.

The participants also discussed various aspects of the Chinese education system, campus life, language learning, festivals, schedules, food, and local customs.

Finally, university students who are studying Mandarin Chinese or serving as mentors to Chinese exchange students shared several stories as part of an integration and discovery event.
