In this interview, she discussed her creative process, how she selected the poems, and her experience presenting her work at the Madrid Book Fair.

The book consists of 102 pages, which were written over a period of six years.

Why is the book called *Time Is a Slug*?

Time passes very slowly, and slugs move that way—that's the most obvious meaning.

There are others that are revealed as the book progresses. For example, children’s stories always feature the idea that the snail has its “little house” (its shell). So, I began to think of the slug as this animal without a home. The theme of moving—the physical and symbolic place one inhabits in the world—features prominently in the collection of poems.

What was the process like for selecting the poems to include in the book?

The selection process was quite difficult and time-consuming. I’ve been writing one poem a day since March 2018. In fact, I’m still doing it to this day. From the thousands of poems that were written, I selected those that were connected by a common theme: the passage of time. I didn’t just select them; I also wrote some new ones to tie the existing ones together.

As a teacher, how do you think your work influences your writing?

I’m always doing research, reading short stories, and looking at different kinds of texts. I think that definitely helps me write—it lets me see what other writers do and what might influence or inspire me. Conversations with my students also play a role. Teaching is a profession that brings you into contact with many people and allows you to get to know them. So, I feel like I’m constantly inspired in my day-to-day life.

What was it like to participate in the Madrid Book Fair to promote your poetry collection?

Taking part in the Madrid Book Fair with my poetry collection was an absolute dream come true. I got to meet many writers whom I admire. It was wonderful to be there and see all the different books that aren’t available in Uruguay.

How did the presentation in Madrid go?

It took place in a huge, beautiful venue: the Mario Vargas Llosa Municipal Public Library. Friends from different countries and cities were able to attend. It was wonderful to share that moment.
