The SOX! project—a technology for the rapid rescue of survivors of landslides caused by natural disasters—co-developed by Santiago Topolansky, a systems engineering student at Universidad ORT Uruguay, won first prize at the Latin American Innovation Rally.

In addition, the project took second place in the international competition in the Innovation category.

The competition, which took place simultaneously at all venues on October 4 and 5, 2019, is an international contest that promotes open innovation among university students in Latin America.

This team-based activity is held at engineering schools and faculties across Latin America over a period of 28 consecutive hours. During the event, participants had to solve real-world problems with creative solutions in the technological, social, environmental, organizational, artistic, and logistical spheres.

The event took place in Uruguay at the LATU facilities and was organized by the Center for Innovation in Engineering, the Federal Council of Engineering Deans, and the National Association of Engineering Faculties and Schools.

The other members of the team were: Alejandro Díaz, José Ignacio Duró, Joaquín Fernández, María Josefina Martínez, Manuel Sánchez, Felipe Santisteban, and Tomás Vázquez.
