Paper and Plastic Bottle Recycling at Universidad ORT Uruguay

Since 2017, the university has had separate recycling bins for paper and cardboard, as well as PET plastic bottles. In addition, HDPE plastic drums and waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) are recycled.

In 2021, nearly eight tons were sorted for recycling:

  • Six tons of paper and cardboard were donated to the nonprofit organization REPAPEL.
  • ECOPET processed 0.34 tons of PET bottles and HDPE drums.
  • WERBA and Filmetal managed 1.29 tons of WEEE and scrap iron.

With the waste reduction and recycling strategies in place, there has been a decrease in the total amount of waste generated. ORT’s deputy coordinator for environmental management, Inés Tiscornia, stated that the goal is to optimize processes to generate less waste, redesign them to prevent waste generation, and continue working to raise environmental awareness among students and staff.
