A person’s results are determined by a formula, Monfort explained: a person’s ability and willingness, combined with the opportunity a leader provides for them to truly be autonomous. “Without optimal leadership, in my view, any strategy that is proposed is doomed to fail.”

We are in the age of women’s leadership. Many of the women who have led in the past likely had to lead in a masculine style just to carve out a place for themselves in this deeply sexist world. Now, whether you’re a man or a woman, it’s time to lead in a feminine way—taking a 360-degree view of the situation and considering influence, persuasion, networking, and motivation, not just the pursuit of results.

Using rugby as a metaphor, Norbert Monfort argued that the fundamental principle of all leadership is to serve employees in order to empower them. “This requires a shift within organizations so that leaders begin to operate with humility,” he said.

“Almost 10 years ago,” Monfort said, “business schools everywhere were using the concept of the ‘VUCA world’: volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous. ‘The situation we’re facing now, with COVID-19, is the true VUCA world.’”
