From theory to practice: ORT will host a one-of-a-kind hands-on course on wood construction

The course, the only one of its kind in Uruguay, offers a comprehensive learning experience. Each of its two hands-on sessions will be accompanied by detailed, thorough, and highly useful theoretical explanations to understanding the construction phases of CLT and laminated wood structures. An exceptional opportunity to train in wood construction in Uruguay

Designed specifically for carpenters, construction companies, construction supervisors, designers, and those interested in architecture and wood construction in general, this 16-hour course—held on July 25 and 26—will take place at the Faculty of Architecture of Universidad ORT Uruguay, in collaboration with the renowned Italian company Rothoblaas.

This course delves into each of the phases of wood construction using a full-scale model. On the one hand, it aims to to learn how to build with wood and to practice all phases of constructing a wooden building, avoiding the most common mistakes on the job site.

In addition, it also provides an opportunity to interact with other professionals in the industry, facilitating the exchange of knowledge and encouraging networking among experts in wood construction in Uruguay.

Each hands-on session will be accompanied by a theoretical explanation to help participants understand the phases of construction with CLT and laminated wood, working on a full-scale model where participants will be able to experiment with:

  • Manipulation of structural elements
  • The execution of hidden connections
  • Installing the panels
  • Installation of tape and trim for airtightness
  • Proper hygrometric behavior
  • Waterproofing the building

Day 1

  • 9:00 a.m. – 9:10 a.m. – Participant registration and course introduction
  • 9:10–9:45 a.m. – The potential of CLT, material properties, production, and on-site organization
  • 9:45 AM – 11:00 AM – Connections for CLT structures: ground connections for walls and columns
  • 11:00 a.m. – 11:20 a.m. – Coffee break
  • 11:20 a.m. – 12:05 p.m. – Handling CLT panels
  • 12:05–12:50 – Workshop: Installation, Grounding
  • 12:50–1:50 p.m. – Workshop: Installing a column with a column base
  • 1:50 PM – 2:50 PM – Lunch
  • 2:50 PM – 3:50 PM – Hidden connections, advantages and disadvantages, evaluation of minimum connection distances, positioning of connections, strength evaluation, and calculation software
  • 3:50 PM – 4:05 PM – Workshop: Installation of concealed connections, connections to the floor slab, and sound insulation profiles
  • 4:05 PM – 4:35 PM – Coffee break
  • 4:35 PM – 5:15 PM – Workshop: Installation of floor slabs and wall components on the second floor
  • 5:15 PM – 6:15 PM – Workshop: Installation of roof components (beams and joints) using different connection methods

Day 2

  • 9:00 AM – 9:45 AM – Acoustics in Wooden Structures: Theory and Practice
  • 9:45–10:25 a.m. – Flat roofs on wooden structures: solutions and a practical example using a double-layer self-adhesive bituminous membrane
  • 10:25–10:45 – Coffee break
  • 10:45–11:45 – Waterproofing, wind and air tightness of CLT buildings
  • 11:45 a.m. – 12:45 p.m. – Hands-on workshop on various types of breathable sheeting (roof/wall)
  • 12:45–1:45 PM – Theory: Details for Windows
  • 1:45 PM – 2:45 PM – Lunch
  • 2:45 PM – 6:00 PM – Hands-on window workshop (participants will be divided into groups to design and install a window in a wall)
