At the invitation of the Graduate School of the Faculty of Administration and Social Sciences at Universidad ORT Uruguay, Mariana Gattoni spoke about the need for professional reinvention in a job market shaped by change and the global crisis.
According to the visiting professor, the key to reinvention lies in having a flexible mindset. Being open-minded and receiving constructive feedback from others makes it possible to embrace the necessary changes.
“A growth mindset is based on a paradigm of abundance, in which we are all naturally talented. We shouldn’t focus on what we lack, but rather on the potential we can unlock,” explained Gattoni. He also added that it is a key factor in fostering a collaborative mindset, as it ensures that “there is room for everyone at the table” and that each person’s contribution is unique and irreplaceable.
According to the Argentine human resources expert, the need for reinvention can arise from an internal or external turning point; it is a breaking point in an emergency situation in which the individual realizes that they must change. It is from that point on that the person begins a process of self-discovery, in which hidden strengths—as well as weaknesses—come to light.
For Gattoni, the journey of self-discovery consists of ten steps.
- Being present. “If my mind is in the past or the future, I am absent,” said the speaker. The present is the only moment in which experience can be created.
- Questioning the way we view the world. “Sometimes we act on autopilot based on inherited beliefs—beliefs that aren’t really our own—and these serve as the mental filter through which we view the world,” explained Gattoni.
- Be willing to step outside your comfort zone. To do this, you need to acknowledge your fears and take action to address them.
- Adopt a learner’s mindset. “It means being like a sponge. It means looking at the world with fresh curiosity, just like children do,” he said.
- Taking on the leading role. This means stopping seeing yourself as a victim and taking responsibility, said the visiting professor: “What is the best version of myself to get out of a difficult situation? That’s what it means to reinvent yourself.”
- Explain your purpose and what you hope to contribute to the world.
- Getting to know oneself deeply.
- Surround yourself with inspiration.
- Experiment and view mistakes as part of the process.
- Enjoy the journey; don't worry about the outcome.
“You always have the chance to reinvent yourself; it depends only on you, not on your circumstances,” Gattoni concluded.
