We’re living through an amazing moment in history, straddling an era that’s just beginning and one that hasn’t quite ended. We love that Netflix saves us time by recommending content we’re interested in, but we can’t help wondering how it knows us better than our own mother… and who it’s telling.

Machines are learning faster than we are, but we should be learning better.

Social media was created to connect us, not to harass us. It’s about sharing information, content, stories, links, best practices, and lessons learned—people, not data-sucking machines driven by profit.

We are turning the integrated into the apocalyptic when, in the age of communication, technological arrogance should be disabled by default.

Since we aren’t robots, we should train our minds to use privacy responsibly; and data—the oil of the 21st century—should be put to work to improve our lives.

SMDUY proposes harnessing the immense benefits of data by making the fine print more prominent: augmented humanity. Greater transparency to overcome mistrust and algorithmic paranoia. Enjoying the incalculable potential of a unique era, and taking care of ourselves mindfully, while adhering to the terms of the agreement.

Social Media Day.

The seventh edition of the Social Media Day will take place on Thursday, October 3, at the Antel Tower.
Registration is closed; the event can be followed on Vera +.

About Social Media Day

Social Media Day Uruguay is an annual event that aims to provide a forum for reflection and debate on the evolution of social media, which has established itself as a tool for communication and business in the new economy. The goal is to foster the emergence of innovative and creative solutions to address the significant challenges of the field, as well as to promote professional work in this area.

The original idea originated on Mashable in 2010 and has spread year after year to countries around the world, celebrating the achievements and potential of the digital revolution in social media. In Uruguay, it has brought together companies, professionals, academics, and students interested in addressing the current era and its challenges in the realm of social media.

The first edition in our country took place in 2013, and the event was repeated with even greater success in 2014 and 2015, all held at the Movie Theater in Montevideo Shopping. In that edition, titled “Community in Dialogue,” more than 900 people registered, and over 6,000 followed the event in person or via livestream, thanks to the support of IAB Uruguay and a number of Uruguayan and regional companies. Since 2016, it has been held at Antel’s Telecommunications Tower. The hashtag for that edition, #laeradelashistorias, garnered nearly four and a half million potential impressions, and in 2017 the theme was #Humanidad2020, delving into the concept that nothing human is today alien to social media.

In 2018, the central theme was #SMDUyFairPlay, and the topics addressed fake news and fake influencers, smear campaigns, and orchestrated attacks that are multiplying, causing confusion, and undermining our communication, our personal and professional relationships, and even our democracy. We are committed to strengthening human intelligence, not just artificial intelligence. We urge you to think before you post.

Technology, communication, design, education, e-commerce, technopolitics, and hacktivism—as well as soccer, charitable initiatives, and storycrafting, among many other topics—have come together to offer a comprehensive overview of ideas, best practices, emerging trends, and future predictions regarding the use of social media in Uruguay and around the world, sparking a national discussion through a dynamic format featuring 15-minute presentations.

Professionals and students in these fields gather both in person and online, with registration filling up within hours of opening.

The event has already brought together more than 70 national and international leaders, who will share insights and creative experiences aimed at fostering more and better professional work in the region.

Screens have expanded the audience, which not only fills the venue but also follows the event via livestream and actively participates on social media.
