International Day of Girls and ICT

On April 28, 2016, International Girls in ICT Day was celebrated, a global initiative launched by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

The School of Engineering joined this initiative and organized various activities with second-year female students.No. y 3.No. high schools. The high schools that participated in this event were Stella Maris, Varela, and Seminario.

The girls were divided into two groups; one group participated in an App Inventor workshop led by Dr. Inés Friss de Kereki, a professor of programming, where they developed apps for use on Android mobile devices.

Meanwhile, the other group programmed Lego Mindstorms robots. This workshop was led by André Fonseca, Ph.D., professor of Analog Electronics and Automatic Control.

At the end of the day, the girls shared a snack and tried out the Oculus Rift virtual reality headsets, taking a ride through the Middle Ages on a roller coaster.

This initiative aims to raise public awareness of educational and career opportunities in the field of Information and Communications Technology (ICT).

Most girls do not choose to study or work in technology, a trend that can be attributed to social, cultural, and educational factors.

Of those who enter this programIn technology degree programs, only 22% of students are women. This information is taken from the Annual Report on Academic Training for the ICT Industry published by the Uruguayan Chamber of Information Technology (Cuti).
