Joe Biden's Campaign Features Uruguayan Typography

May 23, 2019
The U.S. political campaign leading up to the 2020 presidential election has Uruguayan typeface: Brother 1816, created by designers at ORT.

Brother 1816, created by graphic designers Ignacio Corbo and Fernando Díaz, was chosen by the campaign team of Joe Biden —Barack Obama’s former vice president—for the election campaign.

This is a sans-serif typeface that offers a choice between two complementary styles: geometric and humanist. “On the one hand, you can choose to use it as a geometric sans-serif—ideal for large sizes on posters, packaging, and logos—or as a humanistic sans-serif—effective for medium- to long-form texts in publishing, web design, and signage,” explained Díaz, who holds a bachelor’s degree in graphic design and currently teaches in the program.

“That versatility is what has made it such a widely used typeface,” the designer sums up.

It really is a pleasure to see it being used so widely across all its design elements: websites, posters, logos, banners, T-shirts, social media, videos…

The designers found out “by chance” that Brother 1816 was being used in the U.S. campaign. “It was while reading design news, where they were analyzing Biden’s new logo. Then we contacted our colleagues at Adobe, and they told us they were using it across their platforms,” says Díaz. “It’s very hard to find out who’s using our fonts; we have a buyer registry, but often they publish the designs months after purchasing the font.”

Díaz adds: “We were lucky that this font was one of those acquired by Adobe and can be synced with all the design programs in Creative Cloud.”

Right now, the TipoType team and I are working on new typefaces that will be released later this year. Personally, I have designed—either on my own or as part of a team—seven typefaces that have already been released, and I have several more in the works.
