The Montevideo Departmental Council will vote to name a street after Ana Benkel de Vinocur

March 6, 2024
On Thursday, March 7, at 5:00 p.m., the municipal council will discuss the matter.

Ana Benkel de Vinocur survived, under inhumane conditions, the Łódź ghetto and the Auschwitz and Stutthof extermination camps during the Holocaust, the systematic extermination of 6 million Jews by the Nazis.

After World War II ended, she was welcomed by Uruguay, a country to which she was always grateful and where she dedicated her life to recounting the horrors she had experienced during the war, as well as to offering a message of hope for future generations.

Following his death in 2006, Universidad ORT Uruguay paid tribute Universidad ORT Uruguay by publishing a Jewish-themed calendar in his memory.

Her daughter, Professor Rita Vinocur, who is also the president of the Uruguayan Holocaust Memorial Center, invites all citizens to join in this momentous occasion from the gallery of the Assembly.
