The objective of this study is to develop methods for evaluating and reporting on the functional quality of digital elevation models (DEMs).

The project “Functional Quality of Digital Elevation Models in Engineering,” in which Dr. Carlos López—acting director of the LatinGEO Laboratory —the Geographic Information Technologies Laboratory, a joint venture between Universidad ORT Uruguay the Military Geographic Institute— and a professor in the Geomatics Department of the School of Engineering, was approved for funding by the Spanish National Research Agency.

The project, led by the Cartographic Engineering Research Group at the University of Jaén and the University of Granada, was approved by the State Program for Knowledge Generation and Scientific and Technological Strengthening of the R&D&I System and the State R&D&I Program Focused on Societal Challenges under the 2017–2020 State Plan for Scientific and Technical Research and Innovation.

Applying the findings of this study will lead to better decision-making in civil and environmental engineering projects based on the available MDE data.
