The Keys to Effective Teaching

September 11, 2017
“Good teachers are those who are committed to their students and teach them how to learn and reflect,” the authors stated.

Dr. Denise Vaillant—academic secretary of the Institute of Education at Universidad ORT Uruguayand Vania Siqueira, M.A.—a researcher with professional experience in academic administration at educational institutions—sought to identify the characteristics of effective teaching from the students’ perspective. They also examined the strategies used by effective teachers and the skills and traits that define them.

Specifically, they surveyed students in their first and second semesters of the Systems Engineering program—during 2014 and 2015—at a private university in Uruguay. They used both qualitative and quantitative methods, such as surveys and in-depth interviews.

Vaillant and Siqueira concluded that students “expect their professors to provide dynamic, heuristic, participatory, and practical instruction that thoroughly integrates knowledge relevant to the workplace.” “From the students’ perspective, the teaching strategies employed by effective university faculty have a direct impact on learning outcomes,” they added.
