Launch of the Bachelor's Degree in Digital Business

October 26, 2020

The online event, organized by ORT’s School of Business and Social Sciences, took place on Wednesday, October 21, 2020. During the presentation, leaders and key figures in the country’s digital business sector shared their experiences, alongside university officials.

A new professional profile

The Bachelor's Degree in Digital Business addresses the challenges of today's world. The curriculum includes courses in statistics and business analytics, programming and computational thinking, marketing, digital business models, and a range of elective courses in areas such as digital business, analytics, business management, computer science, marketing, and entrepreneurship and innovation, allowing students to deepen their knowledge according to their interests.

Thanks to their academic training, practical experience, and ORT’s educational model, the teachers combine technical knowledge with business acumen.

This is an innovative degree program in the region. Graduates will be equipped to lead digital businesses and to transform non-tech companies through their ability to develop strategic frameworks and their understanding of the importance of technology in business.

These professionals will be able to identify untapped market opportunities and address societal challenges and needs. They will be able to lead digital transformation initiatives to reduce costs, increase efficiency, and enable companies to compete in an increasingly globalized and competitive environment.

InfoCasas and dLocal are two clear examples of how important it is today to promote technology within companies.

From the analog world to the digital world

During the launch of the Bachelor’s Degree in Digital Business, Ricardo Frechou—CEO of InfoCasas and a graduate of ORT’s Management and Administration program—described the process by which the real estate portal InfoCasas transitioned from an analog to a digital format.

“When people were looking for properties in the newspaper, we broke new ground by launching a magazine. That was the cornerstone of this company,” he explained, noting that the magazine, unlike the newspaper, allowed us to focus on design and production quality.

“We then began applying big data and business intelligence analysis to develop highly user-friendly tools for the real estate industry,” he added.

“Today we have 240 interconnected cell phones that initiate 60,000 calls per day. At the same time, we have monitors tracking every call. The integration of hardware and software has given us an incredibly powerful tool,” said Frechou, adding that InfoCasas currently has two buildings under development that are 100% based on big data.

From Startup to Unicorn

DLocal, the first Uruguayan company to be designateda “unicorn, provides digital payment solutions to companies such as Amazon, Uber, Nike, TripAdvisor, and Booking.

“Companies want the payment experience to be user-friendly and seamless. To achieve this, they integrate with us through a single technological connection. Our platform allows them to access emerging markets and process their payments in those markets,” explained Jacobo Singer—COO of dLocal and a systems engineer from ORT.

“Payment methods are essential. Customers want to pay their bills the same way they pay their other bills every month, without encountering any major obstacles in the process,” he said.

He also mentioned that dLocal is constantly on the lookout for graduates with the kind of background offered by the Bachelor’s Degree in Digital Business. “This program,” he added, has range of fields that are highly valuable to professionals.”
