July 10, 2014
Interview conducted as part of a series of interviews with visiting professors in the graduate programs at the Institute of Education.

Hugo Labate currently teaches the seminar “Assessment of Learning in Higher Education,” organized by the Center for Continuing Education in Higher Education (CAES) at the Institute of Education of Universidad ORT Uruguay.

Prof. Labate discusses the challenges teachers face when assessing student learning, noting that the two main issues they encounter relate to "authenticity" and "consistency."

Labate also draws on examples from his own practice to highlight the challenges students face when they are assessed, and emphasizes the importance of ensuring that assessments "measure what they are intended to measure."

Finally, given his extensive experience in Chilean universities, he draws some comparisons between the traditions of assessment processes in Chile and Uruguay.
