Among the award recipients are journalism graduates from ORT:
- Angelina De los Santos, who holds a bachelor’s degree in communication with a focus on journalism, won the 8th Marcelo Jelen National Print Media Award for her investigative report “Missing Women in Uruguay: 30 Years of Government Inaction in the Face of Evidence of Sex Trafficking, ” published on June 27, 2023, on the openDemocracy platform.
The journalist investigates nine cases of missing women, exposing police and judicial failures. Drawing on testimony from the collective ¿Dónde Están Nuestras Gurisas? (DENG), she examines official sources and court records to demonstrate that nearly half of the thousands of annual reports of missing persons are ultimately confirmed as cases of “absence,” with the trafficking of women suspected as one of the causes. - Nausícaa Palomeque, who holds a bachelor’s degree in communication with a focus on journalism and is a professor at the School of Communication, along with photographer Matilde Campodónico, received a Special Mention for her article “Te abracé en la noche” (“I Hugged You in the Night”), published in the magazine *Lento* by *La Diaria* and on the Colombian website *070 / Cerosetenta* in August 2023.
Also addressing the issue of missing persons, the report published in the monthly magazine stands out for the direct testimonies of the victims’ relatives, transcribed in a unique literary format and complemented by photographs. - Tomer Urwicz, who holds a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism and teaches in the Journalism track of the Communication program, for his feature article “Children in a Black Hole: Those Who Never Made It to School and No One Knew,” published in the newspaper El Observador on February 12, 2023.
Among other excellent works he submitted for this edition of the award, the journalist tells the story here through a character (“Jota”), which allows him to highlight that thousands of children living below the poverty line are not enrolled in school—despite compulsory education in Uruguay—and are not registered with educational authorities.
For this edition of the award—organized by Cotidiano Mujer, CAINFO, UN Women, and UNESCO—32 articles were submitted, from which the jury selected the first-place winner and three honorable mentions.
