HUS Furniture, by Florencia Calo. Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Design

The winning product is a piece of children's furniture calledHUS. This recognition serves as a springboard for the aspiring designer to reach a mass audience, as the contest's goal is to select products with commercial potential and include them in the company's catalog, thereby reaching the entire Brazilian market and its regional subsidiaries. In the future, the designer will receive royalties from sales.

HUS was developed by Florencia Calo Delgado, a senior in theIndustrial Design program, for the startupRadice, and was initially presented atRecreación 21. “After taking the Capstone Project course, the feedback from my professors motivated me to enter the competition with great enthusiasm. At that point, I had the entire product finalized, and regardless of the results, participating in this kind of event adds a lot to my experience as a future professional,” Calo said. “It was a surprise to be among the five finalists and, even more so, among the two selected by Uruguay; honestly, I’m really excited.”

The winning projects ofthe 4th Vero De Design Competition, organized byVeromobili Brasil, were announced on September 14. A total of 97 projects were submitted, and five finalists were selected: three from Brazil and two from Uruguay.

A versatile product for a diverse audience

His primary goal is to “meet personal expectations” as well as those of the Veromobili team, both in terms of sales and customer reception of the product. “I think this is an excellent opportunity to enter the market, and I hope to be able to stay competitive with this and other products.”

Designed according to the Montessori educational method, HUS is intended for the bedrooms of children aged four to seven. “Promoting enjoyment of their spaces and developing their skills naturally, without losing sight of the safety and well-being of these ‘little rascals,’ are the main functions of this product,” according to its presentation. “To provide them with a space where their magical and dreamlike thinking can fully develop in a relaxed and enjoyable way. So they can be themselves through their own creations and in their own space. To create that magical universe where they must be able to ‘be.’”

HUS Children's Furniture

HUS is an RTA-style product featuring interlocking wood components and coordinating textiles, characterized by “simple design and elegant lines.”

Calo admitted that the design process was “a bit difficult” because “without meaning to, I always ended up pigeonholing the product into a specific use or name.” Even today, she finds it hard to define it because “it’s a very versatile product that allows children to do different activities: play, lie down, sit, and so much more!” The student said her inspiration was a treehouse and that, in addition to being a play space, the idea is for HUS to serve other functions, such as a coat rack and a shelf.

I’d like to continue down this path. I want to create products that children can enjoy in a variety of ways in a fun and relaxed setting.
