This initiative is a way to support an activity that fosters analytical thinking, problem-solving, and knowledge among young Uruguayans.
In this interview, we learn about the story of Tobías Rodríguez, the winner of this competition in 2023. Despite his love of mathematical challenges, he decided to explore a new academic passion in the audiovisual field.
An annual challenge
"I've been participating in the math competitions since I was in school. I sign up every year because I enjoy challenging myself to solve the problems presented, trying to do my very best. I also love the whole atmosphere that develops, and the friends I reconnect with and continue to make every year," says Tobías Rodríguez, who, from a young age, has found in mathematics not only an academic interest but also a true personal challenge.
From School Math to Competitive Math
"Overall, I think I've always liked math, but there's a big difference between high school math and math in math competitions. In high school, we just work through problems on whatever topic we're covering. Math competitions, on the other hand, show you a much more beautiful—and even fun—side of it," explains Tobías.
For him, the problems in the Olympiad are like complex puzzles that require creativity and critical thinking, going beyond mere theoretical knowledge.
Dedication and Preparation: The Path to Excellence
Tobías explains how his passion for mathematics led him to devote several hours a week to studying and practicing, even during the holidays. "I've been spending a lot of time on math competitions for a couple of years now, with my sights set on international competitions as well. I tried to consistently set aside a few hours each week to solve problems, and I took advantage of the summer to do more focused training," noting that each participant adjusts their commitment according to their own goals.

Support from Universidad ORT Uruguay
Emphasizing the importance of institutional support, Tobías notes: "The university promotes the competition: it brings attention to an event that is organized year after year by volunteers. In this case, the university lends a hand to ensure the activities take place, and also offers a scholarship to the competition winner, which ultimately makes the entire event more inspiring."
From mathematics to audiovisual media
Despite his love of mathematics, Tobías decided to take advantage of the scholarship to explore a new passion. “I had already decided to pursue a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, which is only available at Udelar, but I didn’t want to miss out on this amazing opportunity. That’s why, since last semester, I’ve been studying for a technical degree in Audiovisual Production,” he says, highlighting how the scholarship allowed him to open himself up to new academic and professional possibilities.
Tobías concludes: "The Olympiad not only helped me improve my math skills, but it also opened doors to new experiences and fields of study. Today, thanks to that opportunity, I can combine my love of math with my interest in the audiovisual world."
