“I can’t imagine communication without the use of data”

Ana Laura Pérez, MBA, is convinced that it is “a waste” to try to understand audiences “using methods from 20 years ago” because today there is a far more powerful tool: data.

Nowadays, everything in the world is measured and can be tracked based on the traces we leave behind with every action we take. Big data is simply the ability to process large volumes of data. And because we can do that, we can predict what you’re going to do—and even suggest new options to you.

Ana Laura Pérez holds a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism from Universidad ORT Uruguay, as well as a Master of Business Administration (MBA) and a Diploma in Latin American Studies. She currently serves as digital product manager at the newspaper El País. Previously, she was an editor at El País Digital and the weekly Búsqueda, as well as a reporter for the daily newspaper El Observador. Since 2019, she has served as the academic coordinator of the Bachelor’s Degree in Communication, specializing in Journalism, Data Analytics, and Digital Innovation and Content.

She studied communications because she was initially interested in becoming a journalist—“telling stories, connecting stories with people, opening doors so that others could learn about the lives of people who were nothing like them.” When she started working in journalism, everyone was talking about the future of the media, especially from an economic standpoint; that’s when she noticed that journalists weren’t participating in those discussions. In some cases, they didn’t even understand them. “I wanted to be part of that discussion, to see where the media was headed.”
