Book Description

The Obelisk Ceremony of 1983: That River of Freedom. Author: María Noel DomínguezThe pages of this book unfold a meticulous and revealing account of the “Obelisk Rally,” a pivotal milestone in Uruguayan history that shaped the political landscape and marked the end of the dictatorship. On November 27, 1983, hundreds of thousands of people gathered in an unprecedented demonstration, defying the military regime and raising their voices for the restoration of democracy.

Through meticulous research, María Noel Domínguez reconstructs the behind-the-scenes story of the event’s preparation, marked by fear and uncertainty in the face of a dictatorship that still held firm control.  From the drafting of the speech to the clandestine meetings and negotiations with the authorities to obtain the necessary permission, this book offers access to little-explored information about this historic event, also known as “A River of Freedom,” after the cover of the weekly magazine Aquí. These pages capture the political and social climate of a day that will remain etched in the collective memory as a symbol of resistance and hope.
