Fernando de León, a certified public accountant, was a partner at Ficus Capital, a co-founder of EastInvest, and was recently accepted into the MBA program at Babson University’s Graduate School.

After earning his bachelor’s degree in Management and Administration, Fernando de León decided to pursue a career as a certified public accountant. He was a partner at Ficus Capital, a co-founder of EastInvest, and was recently accepted into the MBA program at Babson University’s Graduate School.

-Why did you choose to study public accounting at Universidad ORT Uruguay?

-The idea of studying to become a certified public accountant came to me after I completed my bachelor’s degree in Management and Administration at ORT. At that time, I had already taken classes alongside accounting students, which led me to want to complement my management education with a traditional degree program.

Once I had decided to pursue a second degree, my decision to attend ORT was an easy one—I would even say it was a natural choice—because I had already been through that experience and was completely confident in the university’s academic quality and prestige.

-What was your experience as a student like?

-My experience was extremely positive in every way. The university as a whole, and the School of Business and Social Sciences in particular, are exceptionally well-run. The academic rigor and high standards, the quality of the faculty and staff, the facilities, the close ties to the job market, and many other factors make the experience of being a student at ORT both challenging and motivating, as well as enjoyable.

-What stands out to you about the program?

-There are several aspects of my accounting degree program worth highlighting. First, as I mentioned earlier, I would point to the academic quality. The curricula are regularly updated, and their rigor ensures that students are prepared in the classroom to succeed in the job market.

Second, I would highlight the teaching methodology. From the very first day of class, students are encouraged to work in teams, fostering a high level of interaction at all times. I believe this highly participatory approach is a hallmark of ORT, which prepares future professionals to thrive in demanding environments—a skill that is absolutely essential in today’s fast-paced workplace.

Finally, I would like to highlight an essential aspect of ORT’s educational approach, one that touches on the very foundations of education. My impression is that beyond merely seeking to train students in the application of technical knowledge, ORT strives to develop individuals who are critical thinkers, innovative, committed, and flexible—people who, through their professions, can serve as agents of change, which, in my view, is sorely needed in our country. This, for me, is perhaps the most remarkable aspect of my degree program.

-Do you think your degree prepared you well for the job market?

I am convinced that the knowledge, skills, and values I acquired and developed during my time as a student at ORT have been instrumental in my success in the workforce.

-What has your career path been like?

Throughout my career, I have sought to explore my entrepreneurial interests while also gaining experience in the financial sector.

In this regard, in 2005 I co-founded EastInvest (Valcemar S.A.), a company focused on real estate consulting and investment in the eastern part of the country, where I serve as Executive Director.

In addition, from 2007 through the end of 2012, I served as an Associate at Ficus Capital, an investment banking boutique specializing in M&A (mergers and acquisitions) and structured financing for large-scale projects, with a focus on the Southern Cone of Latin America.

-What role are you currently in?

I am currently serving as Director of EastInvest, a role I hope to continue in the medium term.

-What are your plans for the future?

I was recently accepted into the Franklin W. Olin Graduate School of Business at Babson College to pursue an MBA. My plan is to live in Boston, Massachusetts, for at least the next two years, where I hope to expand my academic knowledge and explore new business opportunities.
