ORT’s Support for “The Role of Agribusiness in the Sustainable Development of Latin American Economies”

Universidad ORT Uruguay the 2nd IAAE Interconference Symposium, the 6th Regional Congress on Agricultural Economics, and the 1st Latin American Workshop on Productivity and Efficiency.

From April 19 to 21, 2023, the 2nd IAAE Interconference Symposium, the 6th Regional Congress on Agricultural Economics, and the 1st Latin American Workshop on Productivity and Efficiency took place under the theme “The Role of Agribusiness in the Sustainable Development of Latin American Economies.” The events took place at the Faculty of Information and Communication at the University of the Republic and at ORT Rambla—Faculty of Administration and Social Sciences.

The event was organized by the Uruguayan Society of Agricultural Economists (SUEA), with support from the International Association of Agricultural Economics (IAAE), the International Society for the Study of Efficiency and Productivity (IASEPA), the University of the Republic, the National Institute for Agricultural Research (INIA), and Universidad ORT Uruguay.

The activities included keynote speeches, panel discussions, and breakout sessions led by renowned academics, government officials, and representatives of international organizations from approximately 20 countries.

Highlights included keynote addresses by Prof. William H. Greene, Professor Emeritus of Economics at New York University, and Prof. Paul Winters, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Keough-Hesburgh Professor of Global Affairs at the University of Notre Dame, who has held prominent positions at the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the Inter-American Development Bank, American University, and New England University.

Dr. Francisco Rosas, professor of Statistics and Econometrics, moderated the panel “The Economics of Water Resources in the Agricultural Sector” and presented two papers he authored; two additional papers he co-authored were also presented. Juan Labraga, M.A., a professor of Economics at the faculty, gave a presentation on economic and environmental aspects related to international trade at the Special Panel of the Society of Economists of Uruguay. Franco Frabasile, a research assistant in Economics, presented the paper “Environmental and Economic Effects of Agricultural Management Practices: An Integrated Model for the Arroyo Tala Watershed in Uruguay.”
