Interview published in June 2006.
"I'm not going to college just to hang a degree on my wall," Carolina thought before starting her bachelor's degree. And she achieved her goal: she now works in a field directly related to her college major.
Carolina has been working at Maersk, a Danish shipping agency with subsidiaries around the world, for two years. She joined the company as an assistant in the sales department after responding to a job posting from the Graduate Coordination Office of the School of Business and Social Sciences.
A year later, she was promoted to the position of Capacity Coordinator, which involved making the most efficient use of available space on the ships. This role entailed balancing the interests of the agency and the shipping line, as well as coordinating and planning cargo shipments from the port of Montevideo.
He currently reports directly to the sales manager. "I fell in love with the company; it's a job I love. Shipping agencies operate at a very fast pace—you have to know how to work under pressure. There are so many things that need to be done right away; there's no such thing as 'tomorrow' or 'the day after.'"
According to Carolina, the "best" thing about the program is that "you get a broad perspective; I like talking to all kinds of people and learning a little bit about everything. Plus, it helps you grow as a person and as a responsible citizen."
The graduate had been part of the same study group since she started her degree. "There was great chemistry between the three of us; we even wrote our thesis together. The group dynamic is really good because it allows you to negotiate, listen to other opinions, and benefit from others' contributions."
