Photography: A Valuable Research Tool

“Despite its ubiquity in social life—and its proven usefulness across a wide range of disciplines due to its expressive, communicative, and aesthetic potential—the photographic record is still regarded as an auxiliary record, a secondary source of information, or an illustrative supplement to the textual record.”

That is the view expressed by Dr. Gabriela Augustowsky—a visiting professor at the Institute of Education at Universidad ORT Uruguayin her article“Photographic Documentation for the Study of Teaching Practices at the University: From Illustration to Discovery.”

According to the professor, thanks to the development and widespread availability of technology, the use of photographs has increased. For this reason, the study set out to analyze the importance, value, and challenges that photographic documentation presents for the creation and compilation of knowledge.

The article “Photographic Documentation for the Study of Teaching Practices in Higher Education: From Illustration to Discovery” appears in issue 23 of the journal *Area*. The journal is published by the School of Architecture, Design, and Urban Planning at the University of Buenos Aires and was released in October 2017.
