Book Launch on the Democracies of Argentina and Uruguay

On May 7, 2025, a book presentation for*Argentina and Uruguay*was held in the auditorium at the Pocitos Campus. The Garden of Forking Paths, authored byProf. Pedro Isern —a faculty member in the Bachelor’s Program in International Studies—and Dr. Constanza Mazzina —director of the Bachelor’s Program in Political Science at the University of CEMA, Argentina—took place in the auditorium of the Pocitos Campus. Dr. Ope Pasquet moderated the event.

The book, published by Editorial Biblos, reflects on the process of democratic transition that both Argentina and Uruguay underwent in the mid-1980s—“countries that are similar enough and different enough that a comparison is not only reasonable but also enlightening.”

It is suggested that, given Uruguay’s recent experience, “it is important to ask whether it serves this exemplary democracy to remain content with being compared to a region that has gone through periods of failure, or whether it would be preferable to engage in a tacit competition with countries such as New Zealand, Portugal, or the Baltic states.” This question, it is clarified, is rhetorical: “the path to development requires understanding and correcting the mistakes of the past rather than modestly celebrating achievements by comparing oneself to a stagnant region.”
