Sharon Barrett is a professor of journalism at the University of Montana in the United States, where she has received numerous academic honors and awards.
She served as international news editor at The Washington Post, a culture reporter for the Chicago Sun-Times and the Chicago Daily-News, and editor of the Mexican daily El Norte, among other roles.
As part of theBachelor’s Degree in Journalism —and with support from the Fulbright Commission—Prof. Barrett gave a presentation and worked with faculty and students on the Iraq War and the U.S. press, as well as on the practice of journalism in intercultural contexts.
The schedule was organized as follows:
- On Thursday, May 15, Universidad ORT Uruguay lecture titled "The Iraq War and American Journalism" was held in the auditorium of Universidad ORT Uruguay Downtown Campus.
- On Monday, May 19, he gave a lecture titled "Journalism and Interculturality" to students and faculty members of the School of Communication.
- On Thursday, May 22, the final lecture, titled "Changes in University Journalism Education," was held, concluding with an open discussion aimed at faculty members of the School of Communication.
- On Monday, May 26, a discussion was held with representatives from the Association of Uruguayan Newspapers (ADYPU), the Uruguayan Press Association (APU), the National Association of Uruguayan Broadcasters (ANDEBU), the Interior Press Organization (OPI), and journalism professors from Universidad ORT Uruguay. The topic discussed was: The state of freedom of expression and freedom of the press in the United States and Uruguay.
