Rankings of Latin American universities

Universidad ORT Uruguay top rankings in international university rankings in 2020, notably in the Times Higher Education Latin America University Rankings 2020, which included a Uruguayan institution in its ranking of Latin American universities for the first time.
Rankings of Latin American universities

Academic university rankings classify institutions according to various methodologies at the global, regional (for example, the best Latin American universities), and national levels.

These rankings are regularly compiled by for-profit and nonprofit organizations, governments, and specialized publications, among others.

Some rankings focus on teaching and graduates' employment prospects, while others focus on the research conducted by universities.

Times Higher Education Ranking

In 2020, a Uruguayan university appeared in the Times Higher Education Latin America University Rankings for the first time.

In July of this year, ORT Uruguay University was included in this prestigious ranking among the 166 universities selected as the best in Latin America.

Times Higher Education is a British publication that covers topics of interest related to higher education. Its rankings are widely recognized by academic authorities at universities and key figures in the education sector, both nationally and internationally.

ORT ranked among the top 15 universities in Latin America in terms of “International Outlook.” This indicator takes into account collaboration between educational institutions in different countries, exchange agreements that enable students to study abroad for a semester, allow universities to host international students, and facilitate the recruitment of international faculty.

The 2020 edition of this ranking was topped by the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile.

When selecting the best universities, Times Higher Education considers factors such as the existence of significant research that extends beyond the borders of the country where the university is located. This refers to research articles (and their citations) published internationally. The ranking also takes into account teaching data, the opinions of selected academics, internationalization, and knowledge transfer to industry.

This prestigious ranking highlights ORT's research efforts and raises Uruguay's profile in the academic world.

QS World University Rankings

ORT made the list of the top 500 universities worldwide in the 2021 QS World University Rankings, released in June 2020.

QS Quacquarelli Symonds is a British consulting firm that publishes this annual global university ranking, which evaluates thousands of educational institutions around the world.

In this ranking, Universidad ORT Uruguay also the highest-ranked institution in the country.

Universidad ORT Uruguay has than 10,000 students enrolled in undergraduate, technical, and graduate programs, including the only Doctor of Education degree recognized in Uruguay.

The top three universities in the world according to this ranking are the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Stanford University, and Harvard University.

Latin American University Rankings 2020–2021

QS Global Executive MBA Rankings

In June 2020, the Master of Business Administration (MBA) program at Universidad ORT Uruguay ranked by QS among the top 140 in the world and 5th in Latin America.

ORT's MBA was the only one in Uruguay to be included in this prestigious ranking.

It particularly stood out in the “Professional Outcomes” indicator, which takes into account career advancements and the increase in graduates’ salaries following the completion of the MBA program.

In this ranking, ORT's MBA program was ranked 66th globally.

In terms of the “Diversity” indicator, which assesses the range of nationalities among students and the percentage of women in the class, the MBA program at Universidad ORT Uruguay 60.4 points, ranking 68th in the world.

America's Best Business Schools (Economía)

For a quarter of a century now, the School of Management and Social Sciences at Universidad ORT Uruguay the only Uruguayan business school ranked among the top 25 in Latin America in the annual ranking published by América Economía magazine.

In the 2020 edition, ORT’s MBA program was ranked among the top 25 in Latin America and was the only one in Uruguay.

This time, the ranking assessed the “Return on Investment” indicator, which examines the extent to which pursuing an MBA leads to a salary increase and, consequently, the time it takes to recoup the initial investment.

The ranking also takes into account job offers received after earning the degree, as well as promotions or increased responsibilities at the companies where graduates of this master's program work.

The MBA program at Universidad ORT Uruguay out in the “Positive Mobility” category, which assesses how much an MBA helps improve graduates’ professional careers. In this category, the MBA program ranked 12th.

In terms of the “Network Appeal” indicator, which examines how a business school’s network of contacts and opportunities leads to job opportunities, the MBA program ranked 15th.

The ranking of the best business schools is based on an evaluation of five aspects of MBA programs and their respective business schools: academic strength, return on investment, internationalization and diversity, knowledge production, and networking power.

In 2020, the top three spots in the ranking are held by EAESP - Fundação Getulio Vargas (Brazil), Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez (Chile), and the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile.
