Recommendations for Transforming the Teaching Profession

With Denise Vaillant serving on the High-Level Panel on the Teaching Profession, the report *Transforming the Teaching Profession: Recommendations and Summary of the Deliberations of the United Nations Secretary-General’s High-Level Panel on the Teaching Profession* was published.

Alongside more than a dozen international leaders in the education sector, Dr. Denise Vaillant was selected in 2023 to integrate the High-Level Group on the Teaching Profession, based on their experience and professional background.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if every student had a professionally trained and qualified teacher? With that goal in mind, António Guterres—the Secretary-General of the United Nations—together with the ILO-UNESCO Joint Secretariat, established the High-Level Panel on the Teaching Profession. More specifically, the group was tasked with developing a series of recommendations and practical ideas for decision-makers and world leaders.

How can such an ambitious innovation be achieved? The work resulted in the report Transforming the Teaching Profession: Recommendations and Summary of the Deliberations of the United Nations Secretary-General’s High-Level Panel on the Teaching Profession, published by the International Labour Organization, the United Nations, and UNESCO.

What was the document’s contribution and unique feature? The publication, which Vaillant helped draft, offered various suggestions for addressing the current challenges faced by teachers. Investing in teaching staff, increasing recognition of the profession, promoting lifelong learning, and encouraging the use of technology were among the key proposals.
