Safety of Journalists: Call for Participation by UNESCO, ORT, and Other Universities

Universidad ORT Uruguay, the Catholic University, the University of Montevideo, and the School of Information and Communication at the University of the Republic (UdelaR), in partnership with UNESCO, are preparing for the seventh edition of the Academic Conference on Journalist Safety, to be held in Punta del Este in May.

The Academic Conference will take place as part of the global celebration of World Press Freedom Day in 2022, organized jointly by UNESCO and the Uruguayan government, from May 2 to 4.

Attacks on journalists are more diverse and complex than ever before: while 2021 saw the lowest number of journalist killings in over a decade, online and offline attempts to silence critical investigative journalism are severely affecting journalists around the world.

In this context, we invite submissions of research, articles, and academic papers on all aspects of the safety of journalists and impunity for crimes against journalists, including the following recommended topics:

  • digital protection for journalists and online surveillance;
  • specific threats faced by female journalists both online and offline;
  • the safety of journalists covering protests;
  • the impact of internet shutdowns on journalistic work;
  • digital media technologies and the safety of journalists;
  • The 10th anniversary of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity: achievements, challenges, and the way forward.

Abstracts will be accepted until February 15, 2022.
