Five communications professionals spoke about their careers, shared how they discovered their calling, and discussed the challenges they have faced in the workplace.

Sofía Macció, who holds a bachelor’s degree in communication, is a partner and co-director of the production company Amazonas Media. She said that as she pursued her career, she discovered that “everything she had put into practice in college was what she was applying in the real world.” She realized that she had gained “real-world experience, discipline, and the ability to learn from her mistakes.”

Since 2016, Macció has been part of Proyecto Shoá, having served in the roles of educator, coordinator, and director. She was part of Suena Tremendo (El Espectador radio), Los Emprendedores, La Sed y El Agua, and Buscadores (Uruguayan National Television), and worked as an editor and audiovisual producer for the Mundo Marketing website.

Digital Content

Mandy Barrios, the social media sub-editor at El Observador, holds a master’s degree in Digital Journalism from Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona. Previously, she worked at El Espectador.

In her talk, she explained that, as a social media sub-editor, she has to engage with a “huge community,” which challenges her to stay up to date and keep learning. “When you study Digital Content, you can pursue your passions,” she said.

Journalism

“We want to share what we know with others, because we have a natural urge to tell stories,” said Joaquín Silva, a news reporter for the newspaperEl Observadorand the websiteEcos.

“It’s one of the most rewarding aspects of journalism,” he summed up.

On Twitter, he added: “And talking about journalism—discussing, debating, and reflecting on the profession as a student, professor, junior reporter, or seasoned professional—is another matter entirely.”

Advertising and Marketing

Advertising analyst Sofía Escofet currently works as a freelance creative director. She has been a member of the teams at CeroNegativo, Publicis Impetu, and JWT Uruguay. She has developed campaigns for Samsung, Pepsi, Nestlé, Jeep, Movistar, and other clients. Her work has been recognized at the Ojo de Iberoamérica, Desachate, Effie, IAB Mixx, and Campanas de Oro awards.

He described his profession as that of “a curator of stories,” someone who has to trust his instincts, “but, to ensure those instincts don’t fail us, we have to be prepared.”

Business Communication

Mercedes Inciarte, who holds a bachelor’s degree in Corporate Communication, is a sales and catering manager at Hampton by Hilton Montevideo Carrasco. She said that working on the pre-opening of this hotel chain was a challenge: “It helped me understand everything I learned in college.”

“From the moment I discovered the field of business communication, I knew that was where my calling lay,” she concluded.
