The Dilemmas and Challenges of Teacher Training

November 22, 2018
“Attracting and retaining good teachers is a key issue in most Latin American countries,” said Dr. Denise Vaillant.
The Dilemmas and Challenges of Teacher Training

In the chapter he authored—titled“Initial Teacher Training in Latin America: Context, Dilemmas, and Challenges”—he noted that, despite the reform efforts that have been launched across the continent, the changes in teacher training “have not been far-reaching.”

However, what are the right policies for ensuring high-quality education? How can we transform teaching—a profession that does not attract the best candidates and that young people sometimes choose “by default”? What steps should be taken to attract and retain teachers?

In addition to providing an overview of the current state of education, Vaillant outlined a number of ideas in the chapter for improving teacher training.

“Initial Teacher Education in Latin America: Context, Dilemmas, and Challenges” is included in the book *From Foundations to Practice: Some Challenges in Initial Teacher Education*, edited by José Garrido Miranda, Vanessa Vega Córdova, and Andrea Bustos Ibarra.
