María José Maidana, a certified public accountant, shared her experiences studying at Universidad ORT Uruguay her experiences in the job market.

-How did you discover your calling?

-Ever since I was very young, I’ve loved numbers and the idea of managing businesses. While I really enjoy the business side of things, I thought that combining that interest with a degree in public accounting would be very useful for my professional future.

-Why did you choose to study at Universidad ORT Uruguay?

-At first, I started my degree at the University of the Republic, but working nine-hour days (on top of several strikes I had to deal with), I found it hard to make progress.

A friend of mine who was studying engineering at Universidad ORT Uruguay in Universidad ORT Uruguay explained the benefits to me, particularly the flexible schedule, which was essential for me to manage my time and study even though I work so many hours.

-What did you find appealing about the university's offer?

-From the very first moment I went to the university and had my interview with Ms. Lourdes Volpi, the program coordinator, I was impressed by how well-organized everything was—from the curriculum to the class schedules and exam periods, which allowed me to manage my time effectively. That’s when I decided to start my studies there.

Later, as a student, I realized how well the courses are coordinated within each semester of the curriculum. What you’re learning in one course, you’re also exploring in another from a different perspective.

-What was your experience as a student like?

-My experience as a student was excellent. The quality of the classes, and the dedication of both the coordinators and the professors to ensuring everything ran smoothly and that we had everything we needed, was always top-notch.

In my case, coming from a public university, that change was more noticeable and more appreciated.

-Did your degree prepare you well for the job market?

-Yes, that's right. In my case, I kept the same job almost until I finished my degree, but I was able to apply what I learned in school and take on more tasks and responsibilities.

-What is your current position, and what are your plans for the future?

-As I mentioned earlier, I worked at the same company from before I started college until December 2013. I worked in the administrative and accounting department of an agricultural services company.

Since then, I have been working for a grain trading company that is also involved in agriculture, and I plan to continue working in this sector.

Today I feel like I'm starting a new chapter in my life, and I think college gave me the tools to do so.

-How would you rate your degree program and your experience at the university?

-It's really good; I definitely recommend it 100%.
