ORT Kiryat Motzkin pays tribute to astronaut Ilan Ramon

February 28, 2003
The ORT Technical Institute in Kiryat Motzkin, Israel, will be renamed after Ilan Ramon in honor of Israel’s first astronaut, who tragically died in the Columbia disaster.

Students from that school presented a research project that the astronaut took into space.

The project involved studying the growth of silicates in a weightless environment; to this end, Colonel Ramon took samples of cobalt and calcium into space to conduct the experiment.

The students received an email from Ramon while in space with the results, which confirmed their hypotheses, but the project cannot continue due to the destruction of the physical evidence.
