On May 15, 2018, the Libertad Prison Memorial was inaugurated, paying tribute to the 2,872 political prisoners who were held there between 1972 and 1985. The monument, which honors the memory of those who died during the civil-military dictatorship, was designed by architect Javier Olascoaga, a professor in Project 8 at the School of Architecture, and architect Raquel Lejtreger, undersecretary of the Ministry of Housing, Land Use Planning, and the Environment.
The construction of the monument was an initiative of the Association of Political Prisoners of Uruguay (CRYSOL, Center for Labor Relations and Solutions), in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Culture (MEC) and the Ministry of Transportation and Public Works (MTOP), with support from the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) and citizen groups in the city of Libertad.
The memorial takes the form of a half-open door set within a concrete frame. Engraved on it are the names and identification numbers of the political prisoners who died in the prison.
Olascoaga and Lejtreger are the children of political prisoners and met in prison while visiting their fathers.
The Penal de Libertad Memorial Site will be inaugurated this afternoon- article published on Montevideo Portal on May 15, 2018
