Video Games and Gamification in Education

What can we learn from video games, and why should we consider gamification as a teaching strategy?

“Much of the education system focuses on what we can’t do, but video games teach us what we can do,” said Dr. Carina Lion, assistant professor of Educational Technology in the School of Philosophy and Letters at the University of Buenos Aires.

The visiting professor from the Institute of Education at Universidad ORT Uruguay that the topic of play is not a new one: “Generally speaking, we associate it with early childhood education, but as we move through the educational system, we play less.”

Gamification—an educational strategy based on incorporating game-like elements into teaching—offers, in his view, a wide range of possibilities.

For example, understanding that mistakes are constructive. He explained that, in the educational setting, there’s rarely a “second chance”: “We fail a test and feel bad, but in video games we always get another chance.”

For that reason, Lion outlined the possibilities offered by video games and detailed some ways to incorporate them into the classroom to enhance learning:
